TLS has been designed with stronger security mechanisms compared to SSL. It addresses vulnerabilities found in SSL.
While TLS is technically an improvement to SSL, the two protocols aren't directly compatible with each other.
SSL has numerous versions, which include SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0. TLS, however, has variations starting from TLS 1.0 to TLS 1.3.
TLS is the more commonly used protocol for securing internet communication. Most modern web browsers and servers support TLS.
