89% of Organizations Lacks Data Protection: CXO Research

The use of technology has increased for many organizations across different industries. But, is the data protection issue resolved yet? Research by CXO indicates, still, 89% of organizations don’t have the needed data protection.

This is a disconnect between business expectations and IT’s ability to deliver. As per the Veeam Data Protection Trends Report 2022, about 9 out of 10 organizations are not protecting data sufficiently.

Veeam Software – a US-based data protection company found that 88% of IT leaders expect the data protection rates to grow at a higher rate than the broader IT spending. This is because the data is more crucial for any business’s success and the challenges to protect it are very complex. Due to this, more than two-thirds of the business’ are opting for cloud-based services to protect their essential data.

The report claimed that more than 3,000 IT decision-makers and global enterprises must need to understand their data protection strategies for the next 12 months and beyond. The survey examines how organizations are evolving and preparing themselves for the IT challenges they face, which includes huge growth in the use of cloud services and cloud-native infrastructure, as well as the expansion of the cyberattack landscape and the step they are taking to implement a modern data protection strategy that ensures the smooth operation of a business.

Anand Eswaran, the Chief Executive Officer at Veeam, said “from the past two years, the data growth has been doubled, which is very huge because people have embraced the remote working culture and cloud-based services and so forth. “

He further added, as the data volume has exploded, the risk associated with data protection has also increased, where ransomware is the prime concern. This research displays that organization are now aware of these issues and are ready to invest or some are already investing heavily, often because some have fallen short in delivering the protection that user needs.

According to the same research, 84% of Indian organizations suffered ransomware attacks, which made cyber-attack one of the biggest causes of downtime for the second consecutive year. The report highlights, that from the past 12 months, 95% of Indian organizations have experienced unexpected outages.

Sandeep Bhambure, Vice President at Veeam Software, India & SAARC said, “it is very critical nowadays, for every business to remain confident that their data is protected and always available, whether it’s on-premises, or at the edge, or in the cloud. With the intent to protect the business from data protection challenges, 93% of the respondents plan to increase their data protection budgets during 2022 – they are ready to spend an average of around 7% more than 2021.”

Key Findings From Veeam Data Protection Trends Reports 2022 

Businesses have an availability gap: 90% of respondents confirmed that they have an availability gap between their expected SLAs and how fast they can get the returns. This gap has been risen by 10% since 2021.

Data remains unprotected: Despite spreading awareness about the importance of data backup, it’s a fundamental part of data protection strategy, 18% of global organizations’ data is not backed up – thus, their data remains completely unprotected.

Human error is very common: Technical failures are the most common cause of downtime. Around 53% of respondents experience outages across infrastructure/networking, server hardware, and software. 46% of respondents claimed that they face administrator configuration error, whereas, 49% were victims of accidental data deletion, overwriting of data, or corruption caused by users.

Protecting remote workers: The survey estimates that only 25% of organizations utilize orchestrated workflows in order to reconnect resources during the disaster, while 45% runs the predefined scripts to reconnect resources running remotely during downtime. 29% of respondents manually reconfigured user connectivity.

Economic driven remain critical: 25% of IT leaders said, they feel motivated to improve the economy of their business, and hence, tend to purchase an enterprise data solution.
